The three Indian Education Centers in Owen Valley, California will participate in the professional development to be held January 20 to February 2, 2008. The education centers are on the Paiute-Shoshone Reservations in Lone Pine, Big Pine, and Bishop that serve American Indian youth grades K through 12. The students eligible for the ASC field-test program also attend local public schools and, on average, make up about 15 percent of the student body.

The purpose of this first ASC workshop in Owens Valley is to address modifications of the curriculum materials to be more culturally relevant to the students in this area. Studies by Aikenhead and others report encouraging positive outcomes have occurred with students when curriculum materials are culturally relevant (Aikenhead, 2001 and Matthews and Smith, 1994). There will be an emphasis during the field-testing on tailoring the scientific content and the pedagogical practices to best suit the needs of the teachers and students in this unique setting.

Between 15 and 20 secondary students will participate in the ASC program beginning in March 2008 and continuing through the summer. The sequence of activities and the application of scientific research by the students will be designed to take advantage of the resources available in and round Owens Valley. For example teachers and students will take field trips and plan research projects using the geologically and biologically rich environment surrounding Owens Valley.

Astronomy
Caltech Astronomy: Introduction to OVRO

The Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) is the largest university-operated radio observatory in the world. The observatory is located near Bishop, California, approximately 250 miles north of Los Angeles on the east side of the Sierra Nevada. For reference, its coordinates are 37°14'02" latitude, 118°16'56" longitude at 1222 meters above sea level. A radio telescope collects radio waves coming from a small region of the sky and brings them to a focus. At the focus, a receiver converts the radio waves into electrical signals that can be processed immediately or recorded for later use.

The White Mountain Research Station is a multicampus research unit (MRU) of the University of California Office of Research, with a campus office located at UC San Diego. WMRS includes a base station near the town of Bishop (Owens Valley Lab; elevation 4000') , a montane station at Crooked Creek (elev. 10,200'), an alpine station at Barcroft (elev. 12,500'), and a high alpine summit lab on White Mountain Peak (elev. 14,250').
